Start with the operating decision
A load forecast is useful only when a team knows which decision it changes. Define the geography, forecast horizon and owner before comparing models. The person planning a connection years ahead needs a different error measure from a control-room operator reviewing the next interval.
Keep the network model in view
GE Vernova describes GridOS for Distribution as bringing planning, operations, distributed resources and field information together. Schneider Electric describes One Digital Grid as an environment spanning planning, operations and assets. Both point to the importance of connected context, rather than an isolated prediction. Test against a credible baseline
Use a time-ordered holdout period that includes unusual demand and weather. Compare against a seasonal or operational baseline. Check errors at constrained locations, not only an average across the whole system. Keep the data available at prediction time separate from information learned later.
Turn the finding into a pilot
Record model version, source timestamps, missing-data behaviour and the route to human review. A useful first pilot can produce advisory outputs alongside the existing workflow. Progression into operational use needs the network owner’s engineering, cyber and change-control processes.
A practical evaluation framework
| Decision area | Evidence to record | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Forecasting | Error by interval and location | Does improvement persist during the operating conditions that matter? |
| Network model quality | Resolved mismatches and traceable updates | Who confirms that the representation matches the physical system? |
| Restoration support | Time to a verified action | What happens when field information conflicts with a prediction? |
